Exciting Changes to SSI Applications: What You Need to Know

Published on: September 12, 2024

Social Security Disability LawyerThe Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced some big changes aimed at simplifying the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) online application process. SSI provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have limited income or resources, but the current application can be tricky to navigate. Many applicants find it confusing, often needing to reread questions and instructions just to figure out what information is being asked for.

What’s New?

Starting in December 2024, the SSI online application will become much more user-friendly for specific groups, including:

  • First-time applicants
  • Those aged 18 to 64
  • Individuals who have never been married
  • People applying for both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI benefits

The SSA is streamlining the process with plain-language questions, pre-populated answers, and smoother transitions between sections, making it easier to understand and complete.

And there’s more good news! By the end of 2025, the updated application will be available to all applicants.

SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley stated, “People in our communities who need this crucial safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less burdensome and more accessible than what we now have, and we’re committed to achieving that vision over the next few years.”
