Social Security Disability and SSI-Related Benefits to Increase by 2.5% in 2025
Social Security Administration benefits will see a 2.5% increase in 2025. This cost-of-living adjustment will affect (1) retirees, (2) people receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, and (3) recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The increase rate is lower than in previous years—3.2% in 2024, 8.7% in 2023, and 5.9% in 2022.
The adjustment will take effect in January 2025 for retirees and SSD recipients, while SSI beneficiaries will see the increase starting December 31, 2024. Additionally, the Social Security Administration announced an increase in the substantial gainful activity threshold from $1,550 to $1,620 per month. Substantial gainful activity is the amount of monthly earnings from work you can receive and still be eligible for disability benefits.
On average, retiree benefits will rise by approximately $48 per month, SSD benefits by $38 per month, and SSI beneficiaries’ standard monthly payment by $24. This increment aims to help recipients meet the growing costs of food, housing, and other necessities—though many consider it insufficient.
