Summer Is Here – You Checked Your Car, How About Your Car Insurance?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 29 percent more people die from car crashes in summer compared to winter. AAA refers to the time between Memorial and Labor Day as “The 100 Deadliest Days” because of the sharp increase in auto-related teen deaths. Thus, while summer is a time for vacations and relaxation, it is also a time to be even more careful to avoid getting into a car accident.

The first thing to do is the be vigilant and watch for careless drivers and others who may be impaired from enjoying summer celebrations a bit too much.

Equally important is the need to be sure that you have the right insurance coverage to protect you, your family and other loved ones if you are injured in an accident.

In Pennsylvania, here is a checklist of coverage you should have:

  • Purchase FULL TORT COVERAGE, which allows you to be compensated for your injuries and pain and suffering regardless of whether your injuries were catastrophic or healed relatively quickly. If you purchase limited tort coverage, you can only be compensated for your pain and suffering if you have a serious injury, generally not common injuries such as strains, sprains and whiplash.
  • Purchase stacked UNINSURED (UM) and UNDERINSURED (UIM) motorist coverage. UM coverage protects you if you are injured by a driver who was not insured, while UIM coverage protects you if the driver who injured you did not have enough insurance to compensate you for all of your wage losses, medical expenses and pain and suffering. Plus, stacked coverage combine the amount of insurance for all cars on your policy.
  • Have sufficient liability coverage to protect you if an accident is your fault.
